Spotted! Tina Fey and Steve Carell filming Date Night around the block from me. They were in a hot silver Audi and Steve Carrell struggled to parallel park it in his excruciatingly awkward/hilarious Steve Carell way, while Tina Fey looked annoyed. Cute!

And since I'm doing this, might as well get the rest out of the way:
  • 06/07/09: Jim Gaffigan, Bowery and Bleeker
  • 06/20/09: Chloe Sevigny, East Village
  • 06/26/09: Cameron Diaz, Village East Cinema at the midnight showing of The Room, WHICH IS AN AMERICAN CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE THAT DESERVES ITS OWN SEPARATE PICSPAM POST, TRUST. THAT WILL BE HAPPENING.
  • LJ is my personal Gawker Stalker.

Now the real reason for this post! Being the New Yorker that I am, I'd only wear black/white/gray, when last summer I suddenly decided I wanted everything in jewel tones. EVERYTHING. So here's a picspam of all my jewel tone stuff! Funny sidestory: I sent the pics to [info]bellanut to talk it out (sometimes we talk out our picspams) and she was like, OHMYGOD I HAD THE SAME EXACT IDEA. And by same exact idea I mean same concept and same format and same everything. SHE IS WORKING ON HERS RIGHT NOW. WE ARE SO PICSPAMMING SOULMATES.

LJ is dead, no one updates anymore, what the hell is Tumblr. Seriously, no one wants these Dreamwidth invites? I read and watched The Kite Runner all in one day and both were amazing - the book more so, but still, amazing. Better Off Ted comes back tonight with new episodes in a summer schedule I don't understand, ABC. I watched the gayest Korean movie ever (tagline: "The tangy tale of four tasty men.") and it was as delightful and nonsensical as expected; maybe I will picspam it because it's just so pink and fluffy and gay.

Meme! Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.

I don't know how, but I stumbled across this great little animated movie called Sita Sings the Blues, which was released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license and therefore free (and legal!) to view online. It was funded through donations by the public, and it's just really great to see someone be able to make a quality movie outside the Hollywood system. Also, it's crazy pretty!

    1. I'm currently sitting on two Dreamwidth invites. Holla at your boy, Tim.

    2. I love going to bookstores and browsing but I hate buying books because for me there isn't anything worse than the time and money wasted on a crappy book. So I do this thing where I open a book at a random point and read whatever page I land on, and if I like what I see, I'll buy it. That's how I ended up buying Anne Enright's The Gathering, because I opened up to the below passage. Guess what, guys? The below passage is probably the only worthwhile thing about it. Not that it's bad, just kind of pointless.

Ada does not love people so much as feed them and keep them clean, and this is a form of loving too, but he has sucked it out of her, this man with his four healthy children and his perfectly nice wife, he has taken her domestic love and found it wanting, and for a moment Ada does not recognise the lie - that all women are heartless because they are desired. For a moment, Ada stands there and thinks that it is true (and perhaps it is true), she has never loved a single soul. She is alone. There is nothing left for her to do.

    - Anne Enright, from The Gathering

Which reminds me of this poem excerpt that I read at least a million times this winter because it described perfectly what I felt during my depression, but now that it's summer and I'm somewhat normal again, it feels distant and foreign and I can look at it as just pretty writing. Hahaha, you guys, this poem is my depression gauge.

    June 10, 2004

There are no words for what is happening to me. I have lost them all. I can't say anything. I have nothing to say. The weather is hot. I have no money. There are vast repositories of knowledge in the catacombs below the Vatican. There are mysteries. There are conjugations. When I wake up in the morning I don't know where I am. I live in a sedan. I sleep wrapped around a gear shift. It is difficult for me to have bowel movements. I am in pain. I am hungry. I am lost. I am twenty-seven years old. It is morning and there is nothing to do. It is morning and there is nothing to be done. I am drugged with pain.

                   A.A.

    - Elizabeth Bachinsky, from "From the Secret Diaries of Antonin Artaud"

    3. An icon meme stolen from [info]schmiss, which made me realize I have like no variety in my icons. It's all just sad pretty people looking down.

    4. I finished [info]bluegreensmoke's prize for the 2009 Fandom Steel Cage Match March Madness Office Pool (only 3 months late!), and she graciously offered to share it with the rest of the interwebs. It's a Betty Draper wallpaper meant to look like a '60s magazine ad, because I am exactly that creative.

Given the recent slew of racism against Asians (Miley Cyrus, Joe Jonas, Avatar: The Last Airbender), I've been getting increasingly angrier at a society and media that declares itself "post-racial" yet continually marginalizes Asian Americans at every level (when yellowface is something that's STILL, in 2009, commonly practiced, that's when I call bullshit). The message that's being sent by Hollywood is that Asians Americans do not matter - we aren't people whose stories are worth telling, we aren't marketable enough to even play ourselves, we aren't good for anything other than stereotypes and background work. It's so hard growing up with that message, that who you are and how you look is wrong. I can't stress enough the importance of positive portrayals of people of color in TV and film; there's an entire generation of children growing up right now who need to know that who they are is perfectly acceptable, that they're American and that they're beautiful.

Since May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I thought I'd do something positive in the only form I know how: picspam! Here are ten Korean American males (females to come in Part 2) who are just plain awesome.

I saw Star Trek and enjoyed it immensely! I've never seen a single episode of any of the Star Trek series and that's very much on purpose - I'm already socially awkward enough, I DO NOT NEED TO GO THERE - but this new one is so shiny, I couldn't resist. It has diversity! and cute boys! and space! All things I love. My only complaint is NEEDS MORE LADIES (I'm going to have that made into a stamp).

  • Tilda Swinton, LES, looking fab, boytoy included (4/26/09)

    3. Did you guys know that May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month? I did not. Reasons APAHM is still necessary:
  • Asian-Americans still regarded as "The Other", despite "American" being right there in the word
  • Miley Cyrus, Joe Jonas, and the ongoing history of yellowface
  • To Gloria, Ching Chong, Love Amy Sedaris
  • Racialicious is my new favorite blog, can you tell?

    4. I missed all of National Poetry Month in terms of posting, but I did manage to collect a few great new poems thanks to my flist. Here are two in particular that stayed with me, because they're basically what my life is right now: dysfunctional parents, baseball, and art. If there were ones about racism and TV, that would be the entirety of my brain in poetry form. I go back to May 1937 / Root root root for the home team )

I've been working on this picspam for almost A YEAR now and teasing people with its existence, so here it is finally! There was a period when I first got this DVD that I'd come home from work every day and watch the movie at least twice. Blond Bond has gotten me through some tough times, you guys. 1. What I like to do is change my username and layout and then friend a bunch of new people without introducing myself to ensure no one knows who I am. My point: new layout! I'm still trying to figure out why the custom security/community icons stopped working after like two days. Has this been happening to other people? (I think it has.)

    2. I am going to burn Disney to the ground. I knew I hated those little fuckers for a reason. Selena Gomez, let's run away together.

    3. Things that aren't racist but in fact wonderfully multicultural: BASEBAAAAAAAAALL. In my heart of hearts I'm a Yankees fan, but Mets spring training is just SO DELIGHTFUL. The Yankees are that super serious, controversial, Emmy award winning drama that breaks your heart again and again but you just can't quit, while the Mets are... Gossip Girl. I don't care if they win or lose, just that they remain young and good-looking while doing so. I swear, this team is like a casting call for a CW pilot. HOW SO PRETTY, METS?

Jose Reyes, David Wright, Nick Evans )

I'M SORRY, YANKEES. I swear I'll do a picspam for you when the love returns, most likely after next Saturday WHEN I GO SEE THEM PLAY IN THEIR NEW STADIUM! Oh baseball. You bring so much joy to my life.

    4. Guys, today is beautiful. It actually feels like spring. The sun is shining and it's warm enough for me to wear my cute trench and I'm going to have lunch in the park and nothing can ruin this day for me. In fact, let's pretend March is over and it's already April, my favorite month of the year because it's National Poetry Month! If you haven't done so, join [info]breathe_poetry and [info]april_is (can I pimp something the mod hasn't even pimped yet? Sorry, [info]moireach.). To kick things off - because it's April, not March! - have a poem from this week's New Yorker. Rename token! This is the journal formerly known as [info]winter_baby. Due to my worsening holidays/birthdays/Seasonal Affected Disorder (I don't care if I've never been diagnosed, I fucking have this), I officially HATE WINTER. Basically from the months of November to March, I am super depressed and tired and sobbing all the time, and I feel I can no longer have a username that acts as if winter is this wonderful great thing, when it's not, it sucks, it seriously breaks my soul. I could cry from the relief of it almost being over.

Anycrazy, I've been thinking of changing it since 2006 and if I can get used to [info]hellopoe or [info]bluegreensmoke or [info]onceuponatown, you can get used to this. I got the name from the below clip of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and because I seriously LOVE robots (if you know me in RL, you know that my greatest desire is to be a robot).
